GOWER ARCHAEOLOGY DAY 2016
2016 is the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the fist AONB in the UK.
To mark and celebrate this event the Gower Society and the Gower Landscape Partnership have organised a Gower Archaeology Day when archaeologists, historians and landscape managers will trace the story of Gower’s past from the Stone Age cave dwellers to 18th century Swansea, reveal how new knowledge is gained and, with this improved understanding, how we are all better able to manage and protect Gower’s rich heritage – our legacy!

Reference and Local Studies book sale, Central Library, 18/19 June …
There will be a Reference and Local Studies book sale on Saturday and Sunday, 18 & 19 June, 10.30 am – 3.30 pm, in the Discovery Room on the first floor of Central Library.
The Local Studies stock is ex-lending material (not part of our important antiquarian Local Studies Collections) relating to Swansea and Gower in the main, but with some books of a broader Welsh interest.
The ex-Reference books cover everything from stamp guides to encyclopaedias and there will also be some general, ex-lending non-fiction books on history, family history and transport (good for railway enthusiasts!) etc.
Hafod-Morfa litter pick and weed, 22 June …
I know if may not feel like summer but the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks site needs a bit of weeding and litter clearing so I am proposing an afternoon session on Wednesday 22 June between 2:00 and 4:00pm.
You might like to come for the whole thing, call in later, or head off earlier, according to your schedules but you’d be made very welcome. Bring your gardening gloves and gardening tools of choice – I’m hoping to get litter picking gear from Keep Wales Tidy.
Grateful if you could let me know if you’re available – bring your gardening gloves and gardening tools of choice – I have three sets of equipment for litter picking that I can bring along and I’m trying to get hold of more.

Brunel in Wales talk, 21 May …
The Historical Association talk on Brunel in Wales is at the Waterfront Museum on Saturday 21 May, 11.00. Admission free.
The speaker is Stephen Jones, engineering heritage consultant to Cadw. He is convenor of the Llangollen Chainbridge sub-panel at the Institution of Civil Engineers. Stephen is the author of the three volume Brunel in South Wales.
The museum is closed to visitors because of industrial action, but the front door will be open from 10.30.

Friends of the Newport Ship Annual Trip
This year’s trip will take place on Thursday 16th June.
It is proposed that we visit Milford Haven Heritage & Maritime Museum, Sunderland Flying Boat Trust Museum and Pembroke Castle.
The provisional time schedule is as follows:-
8.00am – 8.15am Coach depart from Ship Centre
10.30am – 12.00 noon Milford Haven Heritage & Maritime Museum
12.30pm – 3.00pm Sunderland Museum, Pembroke Dock
3.30pm – 5.30pm Pembroke Castle
5.30pm coach depart for return to Newport
Cost per person will be approx. £30 including coach and entrance fees to the three venues.
There are cafes at all venues so that people can eat when they wish. I am not organising a specific meal stop anywhere.
The trip is not restricted to FoNS members so if you have family or friends who are interested they will be welcome. Max number is 49 people and I will allocate on a first come first served basis.
So that I may make final arrangements with the coach company and the venues, I would appreciate your contacting me as soon as possible if you wish to be included and no later than Friday 3rd June.
